Who is Credliss Barry?

Exploring the name "Credlelass"

One of the remaining unanswered questions about my early Lingle ancestors is the name and identity of Paul Lingle's wife or wives. One possibility is that she is the daughter and step-daughter of immigrant couple Susanna and Johannes Artz, identified on the passenger manifest of the Adventure in 1732 as "Credlelass Bennech". Credlelass is certainly an unusual name - should we assume it was a mistake and that her actual name was something more common, perhaps Catharine? Or was this an actually name or nickname (vorname or rufname, spelled phonetically on the list) used in the community where this family originated, the Palatinate and Alsace, specifically Bruchmühlbach-Miesau?

While paging through the transcribed records church records of Heidelberg Township, Berks county, I came across a possible clue - another Credliss!

Credliss Barry as recorded in the transcribed St Daniel's Church Record is Margareth Elisabeth Mauntz, daughter of Joseph Mauntz and Maria Margaret Schell. Her husband Peter Barry is the son of Ludwig Borry, a 1738 immigrant from Gommersheim in the Rhineland-Palatinate. Ludwig Borry settled in Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, where Peter and wife Margarthe (Credliss) moved after Peter inherited the estate of his father in 1805. Margarethe Elisabeth Mauntz Barry is likely buried in or near West Cocalico Township in Lancaster or Millcreek Township in Lebanon County (St. Daniels in Heidelberg Twp, Berks sits close to the meeting point of all 3 counties).

These are all early arriving families - The Mauntz family arrived in 1731 on the ‘Brittania’ from Denkendorf (Esslingen). The Lauck family arrived in the 1709 Palatine migration through Schoharie, arriving in Tulpehocken in about 1724.

How do we know Credliss Barry = Margarethe Elisabeth Mauntz Borry?

From the St Daniels Record:

As transcribed from the notes of Michael Gruber in:

  • Ravert, C. H. (1985). The record of baptisms or stated more fully, the record of births and baptisms. Salt Lake City, Utah: Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah. FHL# 008249009, accessed online at a Family History Library

“Barry may also be written Borry, Barri, Bary, and Parre”

There are two Barry’s in the St Daniels Records:

Joseph Bary and wife Catharine

  1. Elizabeth, born Oct 10 1824, bap. ??; sponsors were Samuel Betz & Susanna Bary, (single)

This Joseph is likely the son of Peter and Credliss below; Susanna Bary is likely his sister, below as well.

Peter Barry and wife Credliss

  1. Ludwig, born 26 Dec 1792; Bap. ??; sponsors Joseph Mauntz & wife

  2. Eva, born 5 Jan  1794, Bap. ??; Sponsor was Eva Mauntz

  3. Joseph, born 2 Apr 1796, Bap. 12 Jun 1796; Sponsors were Henry Fielder & wife Christine

  4. Susanna, born 22 Jul 1805; bap. 12 Sep 1805; sponsors George Ulrich & wife Susanna

All 4 Barry baptisms at St Daniel’s have a sponsor who is a Mauntz, all likely siblings of Margarethe Mauntz as listed in the probate of their father, Joseph Mauntz.

Berks County Probate File of Joseph Mauntz:

Joseph Mauntz died intestate in 1809, leaving a widow Maria Margaretha and 9 children. His widow and Philip Braun (a friend), Leonard Fehler, and Jacob Miller served as administrators for his estate. The children of Joseph are named in the estate documents as:

  1. Elizabeth m. Philip Brown

  2. Eve m. John Hettig (Schlattig) (1), George Epler (2)

  3. Anna Elizabeth

  4. Christina m. Henry Fidler

  5. Margareth m. Peter Borry

  6. Catharine m. William Hoster

  7. Barbara m. Jacob Bardeyger (likely Batteicher or Potteiger)

  8. Maria m. Thomas Long (likely Lang)

  9. Susannah m. George Ulrich

He left 110 acres of land in Heidelberg Township adjoining: Christian Fisher, Leonard Stup, George Ege and others; Son in Law Philip Brown buys the estate and pays off the 8 other siblings and the widow her portion.

Building a FAN (Friends, Associates, Neighbors): Possible Connections between the Borry family and the Artz/Bennesch/Lingle Families

Margarethe Elisabeth Mauntz is the granddaughter of Jacob Mauntz. When Jacob Mauntz died in Heidelberg township in 1753, his widow Maria Catharine (nee Lauck) along with John Boyer and Abraham Laucks were administrators, and Michael Shauer/Shower and John Arts did the inventory of the estate. This is likely John Artz Jr., not Johannes Artz Sr. as he continued to sign documents for the Mauntz estate up to 1780, long after the death of Johannes Artz Sr. in 1761 (though the “HA” mark as signed looks similar to that used by Johannes Sr. on his will). It is also possible that the John Arts who does the inventory in 1753 is the father, and the John Arts who is in later estate documents is the son.

John Artz, on Jacob Mauntz Inventory, signed 1753

Johannes Artz, on will, signed 11 Apr 1762

Sidenotes:

  • Widow Mary Catharine Mauntz remarries to John Dieter/Teeter in 1754. They are buried at St. Daniels Cemetery.

  • A “Jacob Scholl” is listed among those owed a fee in the accounts paperwork.

The children of Mary Catharine Lauck and Jacob Mauntz as named in the estate documents (in various places) are:

  1. George Mauntz b. 1732(identified as Eldest son and heir in 1762 petition for valuation of the estate)

  2. Christina Mauntz b. 1734 m. John Wenrich, a blacksmith

  3. Catharine Mauntz m. John Beigler, a weaver

  4. Joseph Mauntz (no guardian named so over 21 by 1762; other sources say 1750 but more likely before 1740)

  5. John Mauntz b. Abt 1742 (19 in 1761, John Eckert named as Guardian)

  6. Jacob Mauntz (1762 appt. Guardian is his Uncle George Lauck, so over 14 but under 21 so b abt 1745)

  7. Lazarus Mauntz b. Abt. 1748 (13 in 1761, Guardian is…)

  8. Michael Mauntz b. Abt. 1750 (11 in 1761, Guardian is Henry Fidler)

The real estate is 240 acres on 2 tracts in Heidelberg township. It looks like they sold half the property to the Boyers and split half between George Mauntz and Joseph Mauntz, and settled out with the siblings. This property was immediately adjacent to John Artz and near Paul Lingle's original tract in Heidelberg.

Church Records:

Since the Lingle family is absent from surving Berks church records from 1743 to 1761, the absence of others in the same period is notable.

No Mantz/Maunt/Mountz/Monts children appear in any baptismal records for Berks County during this time period despite the evidence that there were many born.

Missing - The children of Jacob Mauntz and Catharine Lauck born from 1732 to 1750

Missing - The children of Joseph Mauntz and Margaret Schell born from 1763 to 1783

But the Borry children (Magdalena, Barbara, Elisabeth, Mary, Christina and Peter) and many of the Mauntz children’s marriages appear in the Christ Lutheran records of the 1790’s

Burials:

George Mountz (1732-1800) at St Daniels (Heidelberg, Berks)
Christina Mountz Wenrich (1734 - 1791 at Christ Little Tulpehocken ( Bernville, Berks)
Maria Catharine Lauck Mountz (1711-1797) at St Daniels (note - a Find a Grave listing incorrectly locates her grave at Robeson Cemetery located near Plow)
Joseph Borry (1790-1880) at Millbach Cemetery (Lebanon)

A Marialis aka Maria Elizabeth in the FAN club as well

The sister of Credlelass Bennesch is recorded on the same passenger manifest as "Merreless".

A daughter of Lazarus Wengert/Wenger/Winger and Anna Catharine Lauck (herself a daughter of Abraham Lauck), born in 1754 on the property near the Artz family uses the name “Marialis” on her tombstone. A future FAN will explore the Winger family.

Does this mean Credleless Bennetsch is also a Margarethe Elisabeth?

No. It is only one example of the possible formal name of a person in the same community known in some settings as "Credliss". Without knowing more about the community and their naming practices, it is impossible to say it the name was common, or if Credliss Mauntz was perhaps named for or even sponsored by the other Credlelass, Credleless Bennesch. Born around the year 1770, Credliss Mauntz Barry could certainly have existed as a baby and chid in the same community as a Credlelass Bennesch Lingle, born about 1724.

If you know of any other early Berks county women named Credlelass/Credliss, I'd love to hear about them!
